Merry Grinchmas!

Monday, December 1, 2008

I love Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas a lot! I have seen the cartoon adaptations, saw The Grinch with Jim Carrey, and I have read the storybook (aww that was a long long time ago, perhaps I'll read it again?) and he is absolutely one of my Christmas haters characters! Dr. Seuss is amazing, what with his rhymes and meters...astounding! Oh by the way, I count Ebeneezer Scrooge as one of my faves, as well.

I'm spreading all this Grinch humor to all you bloggers who absolutely love the timeless classics. This song is sung by Thurl Ravenscroft. Isn't it music to your ears? nyahahahahahaha

You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch.
You really are a heel.
You're as cuddly as a cactus,
You're as charming as an eel.
Mr. Grinch.

You're a bad banana
With a greasy black peel.

You're a monster, Mr. Grinch.
Your heart's an empty hole.
Your brain is full of spiders,
You've got garlic in your soul.
Mr. Grinch.

I wouldn't touch you, with a
thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole.

You're a vile one, Mr. Grinch.
You have termites in your smile.
You have all the tender sweetness
Of a seasick crocodile.
Mr. Grinch.

Given the choice between the two of you
I'd take the seasick crockodile.

You're a foul one, Mr. Grinch.
You're a nasty, wasty skunk.
Your heart is full of unwashed socks
Your soul is full of gunk.
Mr. Grinch.

The three words that best describe you,
are, and I quote: "Stink. Stank. Stunk."

You're a rotter, Mr. Grinch.
You're the king of sinful sots.
Your heart's a dead tomato splot
With moldy purple spots,
Mr. Grinch.

Your soul is an apalling dump heap overflowing
with the most disgraceful assortment of deplorable
rubbish imaginable,
Mangled up in tangled up knots.

You nauseate me, Mr. Grinch.
With a nauseaus super-naus.
You're a crooked jerky jockey
And you drive a crooked horse.
Mr. Grinch.

You're a three decker saurkraut and toadstool
sandwich
With arsenic sauce.

WQ: Cherish the Memories

I'm back and I am excited to reminisce and share my Christmas experience after I posted a...melancholy post. Now, on to the question.

What special Christmas memories do you still cherish as the years pass by?

I cannot pinpoint a single Christmas memory because there have been quite a lot that colored my past but I have learned to appreciate every memory.
Christmas Tree
I remember Christmas dinner at my grandparents house with my father's family. My grandfather was one who loved Christmas and spared no expense when it came to Christmas dinner and the decorations. Everywhere you looked there were various twinkling lights on the outdoor plants and I remember the tall Christmas tree and the presents underneath it, it was enough to make a little girl excited! Approaching 12 midnight, we would all gather in the porch and see the grown-ups set up the fireworks and by 12, all of them where airborne.

When my grandfather died, Christmas wasn't the same. We didn't have the same Christmas spirit that we used to have when he was still alive. We didn't gather at their old house anymore so we had Christmas dinner at our place. It was my grandmother who made our Christmas special. She would always take out the decorations and encouraged me to participate in the preparations. It was during this time that I started baking and helping out in the kitchen. This time, I was happy to try out new things like my fudge chocolate cake and my infamous lasagna. Ham, bacon and hotdogs were a staple and my grandmother would make her famous humba and estofado. Yumm yumm! We invited everyone for Christmas dinner and we also had the fireworks; our very own Christmas tradition.

There is no Christmas like a Filipino Christmas. With me in another country, I can only wish that I was back home...if only in my dreams...

Thanks Living

Thursday, November 27, 2008

We always associate Thanksgiving with food. I mean, how could we not when it started as a way to give thanks for the bountiful harvest, with the first thanksgiving celebration happening in the early 1600s. Historically the American Thanksgiving holiday is related to the deliverance of the English settlers by Native Americans after the brutal winter at Plymouth, Massachusetts.

I saw A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving on TV last Tuesday while I was waiting for the Dancing with the Stars Finale and I was charmed by the way they showed the roots of thanksgiving. A bit childish, I know but it works.

I kind of like the way Thanksgiving falls in about the same week as our Dumaguete Fiesta is celebrated. Now that I am here, I do not long for the Fiesta staples as much as I do...okay, okay...I long for the fatty humba, though but I am not a lechon eater. As much as P kept on "making my mouth water" by mentioning all the food they served at the Fiesta, I was comforted by the fact that we would be cooking food for our Thanksgiving/Fiesta celebration. Aw, we're not having a lot of people over but it does seem like a good excuse to eat, yes?

I'm leaving you with Happyslip's Thanksgiving video TANKS and I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Remember, you don't need to be an American to give thanks!

Note: Food photos will be posted on Friday.

Masquerades and Nightmares

Thursday, September 18, 2008

I’ve always wanted to dress up for Halloween. Unfortunately, all my dreams have been dashed one way or another by some teacher who didn’t allow us students to come in our full Halloween regalia.

No matter, I was still daydreaming (?) about getting my Goth costume. No, don’t get me wrong, I’m not Goth, but I do love how they dress up; it’s like my secret desire, if you will.

My first experience of Halloween here in the US was not as good as it should have been. A friend insisted on going to Hollywood & Vine to check out some Halloween action when in fact, the real action was held at a different location. Anyway, we will try and go there this year and I won’t forget to snap photos of it!

Halloween is not a “bright” costume party so getting a “happy” costume is not what I have in mind. I always go for the seductive and dark costumes if I can get away with it! I hope this year I can grab me some and dress up for the occasion!

Getting into the Halloween festivities whether in school, work or at home is fun! Lots of candies, bobbing for apples, blood red punch, that sort of thing, will be what you are going to look out for. Plus, this is a good bonding time for you, your officemates, or your friends!

This time, I will be darkening the doors of halloween costume stores in our area. Yes, I am not taking this thing mildly. If I have to dress up like a Goth Vamp and be with my Edward (I’m still thinking of Twilight!) for this Halloween then that’s what I’ll do. Happy haunting!
