An Ode to a Street Sweeper

Thursday, August 14, 2008

It was still raining when I woke up at 5 AM this morning. In the gloomy darkness of my room. I could hear faint sounds of broom sweeping outside. It was our barangay street sweeper Manong Iko. He was sweeping the streets even in the midst of this pouring rain! I was shocked! Then it came to me. Manong Iko has been sweeping the streets since...well, before I can remember. He has been sweeping the streets waaaay back when I was still a little girl. My hubby told me that he has been sweeping the streets when he was a still a kid. Rain or shine, he does his job everyday, at the crack of dawn, sweeping the streets.

I can recall last New Years day when he was also sweeping the streets. We hadn't even slept yet and he was already doing his job. Sure, the streets where littered with ash and paper and remnants of firecrackers when the barangay residents (including my father) used to greet the New Year, but instead of taking time to rest, Manong Iko was sweeping the streets, even if it was a holiday. I guess, he doesn't have one or he chooses to sweep the streets in the morning and rest after. Now that is what service is all about. He is only paid a few pesos a month for his early morning excursion but that doesn't seem to deter him in his quest to clean up our streets.

I usually leave my house at around 7 AM and see that our street is spotless. At first, I didn't think about it until I realized how one person has been cleaning up after us every morning. It's a shame, really, when I see people on cars or motorbikes, throw their trash on the street as they pass by. Unknowingly, it seems that they have besmirched Mang Iko's pride and joy.

Next time you throw your trash anywhere, be sure to remember the Mang Iko's out there who are keeping your streets clean. They may have one of the lowliest jobs on earth but at least they are doing their part to save it. They are making a difference. Matsalams (thank you) Mang Iko!

Still Raining in this Corner

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

It's still raining here in Dumaguete today. I know I shouldn't rant about this rain because thankkfully, nothing eventful happened here because of the rain. Neighboring municipalities and cities here in Negros Oriental were not so fortunate. It was on the news last night. They experienced flash floods due to the typhoon Butchoy.
According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer; "Typhoon "Butchoy'' exited the country on Monday, giving way to a new low pressure area, but not before inducing monsoon rains over southern Luzon and the Visayas that could herald the onset of the rainy season." Perhaps this explained the floods over at Bayawan City and the Municipality of Sta. Catalina. Although I don't have all the facts about their current status and/or casualties, I could only guess at it. It was reported last night, however that one person died while crossing a river. Of course, when Mother Nature is at her worst, no one can escape. I just feel so sorry about them. Which makes me count my blessings that we weren't as affected by the typhoon as they were.

Current Weather Forecast in Dumaguete City by Weather Underground
Wednesday
Chance of a Thunderstorm. Overcast. High: 86° F. / 30° C. Wind SSW 11 mph. / 18 km/h. Chance of precipitation 30%.

Hope it won't come to this! I still have duty this afternoon!

I HATE NURSING RESEARCH 1 & 2

Wednesday, November 14, 2007

Pwede! dili gyud pwede ug after intrams na? nag cramming na ming tanan! wala pud ni sila'y klaro pud oi! The orientation should have been done weeks before not this afternoon! And to think, defense would be on monday and we ARE the LUCKIEST one's to be the first! PLUS, we weren't the one's who picked out our number for the order of presentation! What's more, it was done while we were not present at all and we were just told last week that we would be the first on November 19! How unfair can you get?!
If anyone connected to SUCN will read this I have no fear because what I say is absolutely correct. As students, they should have thought that it would be impossible for us to be prepared in such a short ammount of time when we also didn't know what to expect during the defense! They should also consider that NURSING is not OUR LIFE! We have prior engagements and other things to do other than NURSING and I really hate the fact that some teachers just send us text messages to inform us that they would be meeting us ASAP or there would be changes in schedule. That is so unprofessional! Sure, this is the dawn of the technology pero dili pud dagway textan ka na inyong CI nga see you at 8am nya 7:30am na?! Plus dili pa gud maabot dayon ang chain text! How unprofessional can you get! I have nothing agaisnt texting students pero please lang! Ayaw pud lamang ug text ug kanang hapit na pud mag meet...mga at lest 5 hours before the time unta...or text the day before or the night, for that matter.

UNFAIR!!!

It's been awhile! Ha! Just because my damned broadband wasn't working! Globelines!!! Arrrgghhh! Whenever there's a blasted wind there is bound to be NO SIGNAL whatsoever! And to top it off, things had been happening around me that I just counldn't find time to blah blah blah about what has been happening to my life....

The Lowdown on my Life - Resently it's been CrAzY!
1. Escape from Alcatraz
I didn't manage to escape or sneak out during the Acquaintance party. They said I had to be picked up by my parents. MY PARENTS?! For heaven's sake! I'm 23 and I don't need blasted parents to pick me up! To top off that night, it was raining like crazy! Heck! During the party, the lights went out! Woohoo! Like duh! Who knew! Summed up, it was the worst night of my life!

2. Sabbath, Bloody Bloody Sabbath
For the first time in my life, I was able to witness a birth through cesarean section. It was my first time to see an actual major operation at the NOPH Operating Room last July 3. Nice! What entranced me were the tissues! Adipose tissues anyone? It's just like real pork meat....only it's human meat! Errrmmm..... blah blah blah

3. Baby's Day Out
It's babby Frankie's Christening! Yay! Nakakita na gyud ko sa bata oi! And si Sophie?! Ha! Bugay kaayo! hehehe I'm sure liwat kaayo ni Mommy Lurchie!
